Hexagons and Piecing from Quilts....etc.

Yesterday I sat for awhile reading for awhile, then watching a movie and basting hexagons.  I really didn’t get done with a lot but taking it slow I mainly baste with thread – it has been my experience that if you glue baste the hexies either pop out while you are working but you still […]

More Piecing and Hexies from Quilts....etc.

I said I would try to post once a week on progress on the Hexagon quilt I want to make – it is slow progress but I will work on basting more pieces today – I need about 25 or so black pieces and some red pieces.  This is what I have so far – […]

Snow Day from Quilts....etc.

The weatherman said Saturday that we would have rain all day and end with a trace of snow!  LOL – yup right wrong again – we did wake up to rain and it changed to heavy wet snow by 9AM or so – and snowed all day quitting around 5 or so in the early […]

Hunter’s Star from Quilts....etc.

Yes I decided that Hunter’s Star was such a pretty block that it needed to be larger than a table runner so yesterday I got busy making more blocks – there will be four of them – this is with the RSC group – I don’t know if they will stay in a cluster by […]

Rainy Day = Sewing from Quilts....etc.

The Carpenter’s Wheel was finished in the early afternoon – such a dreary wet chilly day – no sleet but cold as rain at 34 can be – it did get a couple degrees warmer but not much – I walked to the mailbox and that was it for me being outside yesterday.  Today will […]

Mirage from Wendy's Quilts and More

It's finished! And I've called it Mirage.  (If I could insert the blue heart emoji here, I would.)

I love how the colours transition from top to bottom - that was my son's idea.

The pattern is Topsy by Sheila Christensen, but I've named this quilt Mirage for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, when I met my husband he drove a 1979 Mitsubishi Mirage and it was blue like this quilt.

The well loved Mirage - that is not my husband in the photo.

Secondly, my son loves Transformers, and there is an blue Autobot called Mirage.

This ...

Happy Birthday from Wendy's Quilts and More

My youngest son turned 21 this week and I finished his Topsy quilt just in time.

I haven't been able to get outside for proper photos yet, but I took some quick photos when we tried it on his bed yesterday.

It's the biggest quilt that I've ever made, so I had it custom quilted by my friend Rayna Clinton from Tui Song Quilting in Wellington, New Zealand. We chose the pattern together and I'm really pleased with it.  It's called Snakes Hexagons by Sharon Perry.

I put the wide back Onion Rings by Brandon ...

Topsy Quilt from Wendy's Quilts and More

The Topsy quilt top is finished and I dropped it off to my long arm quilter this morning.  We looked at a lot of quilting designs, and I chose a custom pattern that I'm quite excited about.  I hope you'll think I made a good choice.

I'm really pleased with how this quilt has turned out.  I loved going through my blue stash and finding all the fabrics that would work.

My son will turn 21 in July, and this quilt is for him.  As you can see below, it matches the feature wall in his bedroom ...

Topsy Quilt by Sheila Christensen from Wendy's Quilts and More

I told you I got inspired at the Kapiti Quilt Show last week.  I saw Sheila Christensen's Topsy quilt on her stall, and I remembered that I had bought the pattern back in October at our own guild's exhibition.

I had promised that I would make new quilts for the bedrooms when we had them painted four years ago, so I decided "this is it".  And I started cutting all my blue fabrics to make a quilt for the room with a blue feature wall.

I'm making the Queen sized version of Sheila's Topsy pattern, and ...

Scrappy Hexagon quilt progress from Northern Deb Quilts

The Scrappy Hexagon quilt is progressing. HOW-TO post is the one before this.
I'm digging through the final 1-1/2" scrap strips to make enough triangles to complete the top.

I took a little time away from the quilt to make a mug rug. Ever feel the need to just have a finish? Me too.

I had a pile of little short scraps collecting on the cutting table. I was ready to toss them in the garbage when it occured to me they might make a scrappy block. I don't need just one odd scrappy block so I ...

Hexagon of Hexagons from Quilt Obsession

This is another of the projects I’ve been working on – a hexagon of hexagons. Right now it’s a hexagon but it will evolve into something else. I haven’t got anything specifically planned — yet. So I’ll just keep adding rounds until it gets to a certain size and then decide where to go with it next. As of right now it measures 11.5″from top to bottom and 13″ from side to side.

The back of it after grading the seams and pressing. With this many tiny pieces, grading the seams will make a huge difference ...

Virtual Quilts: Viewing, Studying and Enjoying Them in New Ways from Repro Quilt Lover

If you belong to a quilt guild, visit quilt exhibits, participate in workshops, take classes, or study quilt history, you have likely had an event canceled or postponed. If you are anything like me it’s been a lot more than one. This has left me wondering how I can fulfill my desire to view quilts and, equally important, to socialize and learn from other quilters. I miss my people! How can I get my quilt fix when everything I used to do is canceled or on hold?

Fortunately, I didn’t have to create the opportunities, I just needed ...

A Bright Baby Quilt from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Looking for a quick baby quilt finish?

I just finished this cutie and the top went together in just a couple hours.

I grabbed a bunch of odd solid chunks in a rainbow of colors and cut them into half hexies using my Hex n More ruler.

I had this playful fabric that I had a bunch of long strips leftover from the trimming of a previous quilt's backing.  I cut them up into a uniform width (and even had enough to cut some binding strips).

I quilted a combination of serpentine, straight and looped lines for the quilting ...

Apron Challenge from Collector with a Needle

Four of the aprons - Chicken Scratch Embroidery
Hmmm....It wasn't a hard decision, I immediately said YES!

Last month I was invited to join extraordinary quilters Allison Aller and Rhonda Cox Dort making quilts from aprons.  I added a caveat I would also make some sewing smalls.

The aprons are from Deborah Turner Ursell's fantastic selection.

Aprons embroidered with rick rack

The first step was to checkout the aprons and start developing some inspirational thoughts.

The colors, rick rack the soft feel of the woven gingham made me think of a stash of men's shirts I had ...

Something New and Easy from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

One of the tasks I have been working on during my sheltering is to try and clean out some of my odd stash and larger scraps.  I use these fabric cuts as "seeds" for making quilts.

Last night I came across some long strips I shoved in a box after trimming a previous quilt.  These were what was trimmed from the backing.  I decided to cut them into a uniform 5" wide.

I then pulled some chunks of solids and cut them into half hexagons using my Hex n More ruler.  I cut these at 4.5" wide.

That is ...

Five Fabulous Quilting Fads – Right Now. from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

What are fellow quilters making? Why are these designs and fabrics so popular? Are these trends new or are traditional styles making a comeback?

Don’t worry, we’ve found the answers. We’ve taken a close look into the world of quilting to find out what’s trending. Here are are the top five:

1. Stars

From Memorial Day to Veterans Day, a star quilt can find itself taking center stage all throughout the year and when we aren’t stocked up on red, white, and blue; quilters find stars to be quite innovative. Five points or ten, stars ...

The Passenger Project from Samelia's Mum

#PassengerProject
#ThankfulThursday

It started out as a project for when we travelled to the US, the year before last. A big tin filled with prepared 1" hexagons to create hexie flowers, which I ended up using to make my Kingfisher Quilt. It's still one of my most favourite quilt finishes to date.
