Yesterday I sat for awhile reading for awhile, then watching a movie and basting hexagons. I really didn’t get done with a lot but taking it slow I mainly baste with thread – it has been my experience that if you glue baste the hexies either pop out while you are working but you still […]

I said I would try to post once a week on progress on the Hexagon quilt I want to make – it is slow progress but I will work on basting more pieces today – I need about 25 or so black pieces and some red pieces. This is what I have so far – […]

read moreIt's finished! And I've called it Mirage. (If I could insert the blue heart emoji here, I would.)
I love how the colours transition from top to bottom - that was my son's idea.
The pattern is Topsy by Sheila Christensen, but I've named this quilt Mirage for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, when I met my husband he drove a 1979 Mitsubishi Mirage and it was blue like this quilt.
The well loved Mirage - that is not my husband in the photo. |
Secondly, my son loves Transformers, and there is an blue Autobot called Mirage.

The Topsy quilt top is finished and I dropped it off to my long arm quilter this morning. We looked at a lot of quilting designs, and I chose a custom pattern that I'm quite excited about. I hope you'll think I made a good choice.
I'm really pleased with how this quilt has turned out. I loved going through my blue stash and finding all the fabrics that would work.
My son will turn 21 in July, and this quilt is for him. As you can see below, it matches the feature wall in his bedroom ...
read moreI told you I got inspired at the Kapiti Quilt Show last week. I saw Sheila Christensen's Topsy quilt on her stall, and I remembered that I had bought the pattern back in October at our own guild's exhibition.
I had promised that I would make new quilts for the bedrooms when we had them painted four years ago, so I decided "this is it". And I started cutting all my blue fabrics to make a quilt for the room with a blue feature wall.
I'm making the Queen sized version of Sheila's Topsy pattern, and ...
read moreI took a little time away from the quilt to make a mug rug. Ever feel the need to just have a finish? Me too.
I had a pile of little short scraps collecting on the cutting table. I was ready to toss them in the garbage when it occured to me they might make a scrappy block. I don't need just one odd scrappy block so I ...
read moreThis is another of the projects I’ve been working on – a hexagon of hexagons. Right now it’s a hexagon but it will evolve into something else. I haven’t got anything specifically planned — yet. So I’ll just keep adding rounds until it gets to a certain size and then decide where to go with it next. As of right now it measures 11.5″from top to bottom and 13″ from side to side.
The back of it after grading the seams and pressing. With this many tiny pieces, grading the seams will make a huge difference ...
read moreIf you belong to a quilt guild, visit quilt exhibits, participate in workshops, take classes, or study quilt history, you have likely had an event canceled or postponed. If you are anything like me it’s been a lot more than one. This has left me wondering how I can fulfill my desire to view quilts and, equally important, to socialize and learn from other quilters. I miss my people! How can I get my quilt fix when everything I used to do is canceled or on hold?
Fortunately, I didn’t have to create the opportunities, I just needed ...

Four of the aprons - Chicken Scratch Embroidery |
Last month I was invited to join extraordinary quilters Allison Aller and Rhonda Cox Dort making quilts from aprons. I added a caveat I would also make some sewing smalls.
The aprons are from Deborah Turner Ursell's fantastic selection.
Aprons embroidered with rick rack |
The first step was to checkout the aprons and start developing some inspirational thoughts.
The colors, rick rack the soft feel of the woven gingham made me think of a stash of men's shirts I had ...
What are fellow quilters making? Why are these designs and fabrics so popular? Are these trends new or are traditional styles making a comeback?
Don’t worry, we’ve found the answers. We’ve taken a close look into the world of quilting to find out what’s trending. Here are are the top five:
1. Stars
From Memorial Day to Veterans Day, a star quilt can find itself taking center stage all throughout the year and when we aren’t stocked up on red, white, and blue; quilters find stars to be quite innovative. Five points or ten, stars ...
